Rex Richardson’s recital

VCU faculty and trumpeter extraordinaire Rex Richardson is giving a recital on Friday, and we know from experience that these are not to be missed. Says Richardson, it’ll be

“a mixed genre concert featuring the VCU Trumpet Ensemble I, pianists Ksenia Leletkina (young Russian-born DMA student at Eastman), Brian Mahne, and Laura Candler White; saxophonists Skip Gailes and John Winn; bassist Randall Pharr and drummer Brian Jones. It’ll be a cast of…dozens! Well, about one dozen. U.S. premieres by Swedish composer Stefan Johnsson (who will be in attendance) and a world premiere by American composer James Stephenson will be presented.”

Rex Richardson’s Faculty Recital is this Friday, February 18, from 8-9pm at VCU’s Singleton Center for the Performing Arts at 922 Park Ave. Visit VCUMusic.org for more info.

Listening Back: Devonne Harris’s Reeverb + 2 bonus sets

It’s about time that drummer and multi-instrumentalist Devonne Harris had a night to himself. He’s one of Richmond’s most in demand drummers as a side man, but the guy has plenty going on for himself.

Listening Back: Lucas Fritz Quintet and Old Soul

Presenting the next generation. This week on Listening Back, we hear from Lucas Fritz Quintet and Old Soul, two student-led groups with big ideas.

This week’s jazz gems

Like any given week, there are some great nights of jazz ahead of us in the next seven days. Catch jazz on the more modern side tonight at The Camel with Lucas Fritz Quintet and Old Soul for free, or see Rattlemouth fuse worldly influences with pulsating western rhythms on Saturday at Emilio’s. In between those two, two more events are especially worth considering.
