This week at The Camel, Brian Jones detoured the music to Monday night, leading two of his groups — Brian Jones Quintet and Brian Jones plays the music of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers — in two thrilling sets.

Announcing RVAJazzfest 2011

The third annual RVAJazzfest will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2011, and will feature Brooklyn-based Harris Eisenstadt and Canada Day, and Richmond bands Scott Clark 4-tet and Old New Things.

Listening Back: UTV.Chamber and Scott Clark 4-tet

Maybe it was the HopSlam, or maybe it was The Camel’s free weekly jazz series catching on. Either way, both UTV.Chamber and Scott Clark 4-tet had great audiences to play for on Tuesday night.

Big Bull on the road

Greetings from Brooklyn, where tonight Richmond’s own Fight the Big Bull performs for Search and Restore’s Victory Party. FTBB brought their massive and joyous sound to D.C. last night for the first of two nights presented by the NYC new jazz organization.

Last night at The Camel, Trio of Justice and Marcus Tenney Trio continued the venue’s weekly jazz series to an enthusiastic crowd. Even trombonist Sam Savage was there to share in the magic, and we got audio from the whole night.

Tuesday jazz at The Camel continues, this time free

The Tuesday night jazz tradition that The Camel started near the end of 2010 continues into the new year. This month alone, we’ll see double bills like Marcus Tenney Trio and Trio of Justice (today, January 4), Scott Clark Quartet and UTV Chamber (January 11), Brian Jones (detoured to Monday, January 17), and Lucas Fritz Quintet and Old Soul (January 25). February looks promising with nights of Devonne Harris and the Reeverb Trio (with DJ Oblivion) and Jazz by the Numbers featuring Bryan Hooten, SCUO, Trio of Justice, and Scott Clark 4tet (get it?). On the horizon, Zevious is making their return to Richmond.
