Squirrels looking for some road wins in New Britain

The Flying Squirrels have three games in New Britain and an off-day before we’ll see’em at home again for a big series with Bowie.

After losing two straight to the Reading Phillies (8-9), the Flying Squirrels (8-9) hope to get both their momentum back and up over .500 with a set of three games at the New Britain Rock Cats (4-12). The Squirrels are 3-0 on the season against the Rock Cats, have won 7 of their last 10, and look to return to their winning ways this week. With Richmond only 2-8 on the road and New Britain 1-9 at home, this is a good chance for one of the teams to shake it up a little.

Until Sunday’s 1-hit loss in Reading, the Flying Squirrels offense had continued to make better on the potential shown in the opening losses of the season. Thomas Neal knocked in 5 runs in Friday’s 5-3 win with 2 well-timed homeruns. The team collected 11 hits in the contest. After scoring only 14 runs in the first 7 games of the season (2 runs/game), the transformation that came on with the home stand at the Diamond saw the Flying Squirrels put up 31 runs over the following 9 games (3.4 runs/game).

With Sunday’s game rained out, the Rock Cats receive Richmond with the taste of Saturday’s 15-5 drubbing at the hands of the Harrisburg Senators (7-10) still lingering.

Winning pitcher in the last game at the Diamond after throwing a 1 hit, no run 8th inning, Mitch Lively was transferred Sunday to the single-A Augusta GreenJackets. Daryl Maday (2-0, 0.96) will make the start for the Flying Squirrels against Mike McCardell (0-1, 4.60) for the Rock Cats in the first match-up of the series.
