Weather! Heat makes a temporary return

Monday’s high temperature will be well into the 80s, approaching 90. Yeah, 90. It’s not an official heat wave – that requires three consecutive days of temperatures above 90 – but it’s definitely warm for early October.

Weather! Clear skies, warm temperatures all weekend long

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will all see mostly clear skies with highs at or above 80 degrees. Saturday will likely be the warmest of the three, topping out in the mid 80s. Overnight lows each night will be in the 50s, warming slightly each night from Friday to Sunday, starting near 50 and ending in the mid 50s.

Weather! Warmer temperatures on the way

If the low moves out as forecast, Wednesday will be the last day of thick clouds, as the low moves off to the northeast. There’s a small possibility of a scattered shower, but that, along with the cloudiness, should diminish later in the day.

Weather! Cloudy, cool start to the week

Visible satellite imagery shows a lot of lingering cloudiness this morning, which will continue through the rest of Monday. Temperatures will only climb into the low 60s this afternoon, before dropping into the mid 40s overnight.

Weather! A break from the rain

Most of the rain has cleared the area, and the flash flood watch has been canceled. The low pressure system responsible for the past 48 hours’ rainfall is moving northward just offshore. I don’t think we’ll see any more rain, but I can’t rule out the chance of a scattered shower through Friday morning.

Weather! Keep the umbrella around

For Wednesday, rainfall associated with a stationary front parked just off the Virginia coast, coupled with a trough near the mountains, will dominate Wednesday’s weather. In advance of expected periods of possibly heavy rain, the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for all of the eastern 2/3 of the state.

Weather! Grab an umbrella

Monday will be mostly wet, as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico is pulled along a stationary front parked over southeastern Virginia and eastern North Carolina by an area of low pressure over the Tennessee valley.

Weather! Just two more days…

Just two more days. Summer’s not going quietly, but given what’s to come over the next two-ish weeks, summer will be done. Finally. Tropical Storm Matthew developed in the southern Caribbean Sea on Thursday, and is tracking towards the northern part of Central America and the Yucatan Peninsula. Keep an eye on Matthew over the […]

Weather! Autumn arrives, summer reluctant to leave

11:09pm Eastern Daylight Time will mark the Autumnal Equinox, when the sun crosses the equator and marks the beginning of the fall season. Meteorologists actually marked the beginning of fall on September 1, but it’s of statistical, not astronomical, significance. The tropics are quieting down somewhat, with Tropical Storm Lisa, about 500 miles west of […]

Weather! Lather, rinse, repeat

While the weather at home has been pretty mundane, it’s been far from it in other locales. Hurricane Karl made landfall around noon Friday just north of Veracruz, Mexico, as a Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour. Hurricane Igor has weakened and is now a minimal hurricane, just northwest of […]
