Good Morning, RVA: You wake up, flawless

Heading into this weekend, I just have to say that y’all look so good.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 34 °F, and my dream of an unbroken stretch of sunny, not-too-cold days lives on! Today through Monday, we’ve got highs around 50 and sunshine set on repeat.

The City has scored some recycling-focused grant money and will begin to replace those tiny recycling bins with big, 95-gallon cans set in the alleys. I’m stoked for this, as my street on the fortnightly pick-up day becomes a menagerie of overflowing boxes, cans, and bins all repurposed to hold recyclables.

Looks like the spending bill floating around Congress may fund the repair of NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, which was damaged in that rocket explosion back in October. Assuming the bill passes intact (and the government does not shut down) you can thank senators Kaine and Warner for keeping space flight from Virginia a possibility.

I’m just going to paste the first paragraph of a press release I got yesterday, so you can read it in full: “Local business owner Mary Tucker has launched a crowd-funding campaign to open The Holding Company, Richmond, Virginia’s first professional cuddling salon. In short, professional cuddling offers soothing touch, platonic companionship, and comfort in a safe, calm environment.” That’s maybe the best business name, ever.

While we’re still a bit early for last-minute Christmas gifts, here’s our list of stuff we use, like, and would love to receive from people we love. Like I said, it’s still early; don’t worry, there’s plenty of time left to not buy gifts and ensure that they’re all last-minute.

One trillion events take place this weekend, so schedule your free time within an inch of its life: Holiday events and festivals, 5 Things, 5 Things for Families, and December’s holiday music shows.

Sports!

  • Rams face off against the 9-0 Northern Iowa Panthers, their second top-25 opponent in a row, Saturday at 7:00 PM.
  • Spiders host the Howard Bison on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
  • Hokies look to gain some confidence at the expense of the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. Tipoff at 3:00 PM on Sunday.
  • Washington limps to New York to most likely lose to the Giants at 1:00 PM.
  • Caps fell to the Blue Jackets, 2-3.

This morning’s longread

Six Stars

Style Weekly. Brandon Fox. Female chefs in Richmond. Read it!

Like most places, in Richmond you won’t find a lot of women at the helms of restaurant kitchens. But they are there. And although the ones on the following pages aren’t the only chefs and restaurant owners in town who happen to sport the double-X chromosome, they demonstrate the diversity of a sometimes under-the-radar group turning out dishes worth noticing, night after night.

They’re tough, confident and they know what they want from everyone around them — and themselves. Because in order to make it behind the line, I hear again and again, they have to be tough — and better than the men around them.
