Good Morning, RVA: Happy folkin’ Friday

It’s a big weekend, are you prepared?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 57 °F, and for most of today, clouds will blot out the sun as showers move in to our fair city this evening. The chance of rain continues through Saturday morning and, with any luck, will start to clear up just in time to get some serious folking in at this year’s Richmond Folk Festival.

The specter of the failed 6th Street Marketplace rises again in this Michael Paul Williams editorial. He covers the Blues Armory’s super interesting history, but guys, seriously. While it’s a shame the Blues Armory sits unused, we’ve got to stop picking at 6th Street scab and move on with life. Let’s get some temporary-use project in there–think the RVA Street Art Festival at the old GRTC Bus Depot.

The 5-0 Dillon Lions, I mean the Armstrong Wildcats, take on the formidable Highland Springs Highlanders tonight. The Wildcats have won five games in a season only three times in the last two decades. I’m a sucker for a good high school football story.

It’s official: Stone Brewing Co. is coming to RVA . They’ll set up shop in the East End, and possibly take over the Sugar Pad to use as a restaurant in a couple of years.

The Richmond Folk Festival kicks off tonight, and such a massive festival can easily overwhelm a body. If that’s you, check out our Folk Festival FAQ, these five can’t-miss acts, and, if you’re looking for something a little bizarre, don’t skip the Mayan Sun Dance.

Sports!

  • Hokies and Wahoos both have a bye this week.
  • Washington travels to Arizona to face the Cardinals at 4:25 PM where former Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas may get the start.

Nobody Knows What The Hell They Are Doing

It’s true! Don’t let imposter syndrome get you down, man.

The genuinely untalented, meanwhile, probably have no idea that they’re no good–because they’re too untalented to realize it. (This is the “Dunning-Kruger effect,” inspired by the tale of an incompetent bank robber who thought rubbing lemon juice on his face would make him invisible on security cameras.) In short: if you’re worried you don’t measure up, that could well be a sign that you do.
