Squirrels swept by the hated Baysox

The Flying Squirrels are glad to be leaving Bowie after a sweep at the hands of the Baysox. But! Now it is on to New Britain to face the Rock Cats.

The Flying Squirrels are glad to be leaving Bowie after a sweep at the hands of the Baysox. Firday night, the Squirrels blew a 5 run lead and lost the game 8-7, The rest of the weekend, they lost their ability t hit and score runs over the next 27 innings. That’s right- 27 innings. Saturday, the game was a 18 inning marathon in which the Baysox prevailed 3-2, Sunday, the contest was finished in 9 innings but still saw the Flying Squirrels falling to a 3-1 defeat.

So now it is on to New Britain, CT for a 4 game series against the Rock Cats. The Squirrels (10-13) and Rock Cats (12-9) split a 4 game series to open the season in April. The Rock Cats are decidedly stronger at the plate sporting a team batting average of .268 and scoring 103 runs. Richmond is last in the league with a .219 team average and 4th from the bottom with 81 runs scored over the first 23 games. Richmond has been doing it with pitching sporting a league second-best 2.92 ERA.

Richmond will need to find a way to score more runs or risk falling deeper into the basement of the Western Division. Their best opportunity will be in the first 2 games with both pitchers sporting an ERA over 3.90. It will take timely hitting from players other than Justin Christian and Charles Culberson. Any production out of the bottom of the order would be helpful.

A few players to watch this week

New Britain- Two members of the Rock Cats are in Baseball America’s Top 10 Prospect List- P Liam Hendriks and OF Joe Benson. The Squirrels will face Hendricks on Thursday.

Richmond- Daryl Maday is on the DL with an illness and replacing him will be David Mixon. Mixon was 11-7 and a 3.50 ERA with the 2010 Richmond Flying Squirrels

The Squirrels will return on Friday for a 3 game set with Altoona. On Saturday, you will get a chance to see Amazing Christopher. I am not sure the best way to describe Amazing Christopher except that you should see this video:

In the hopes of experiencing the perfect meal, Matt “The Marinara” Sadler searches the foothills of Manakin, the barrios of Chesterfield, and the corners of Oregon Hill only to realize that he is easily satisfied.
