Good Morning, RVA: The streak continues!

Mild(ish) weather starts off the last week before Christmas.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 34 °F now, but hoodie weather continues this afternoon: highs in the mid-50s, and clear skies–a repetition of the last several days. A chance of rain tomorrow afternoon ruins the streak, but after that, I think we’re good until at least Saturday.

An unknown number of people are being held hostage in a cafe in Sydney, Austrailia by an unknown assailant (or assailants). Vox has the rundown of what we know and what we don’t know. If you’re interested in live updates, The Sydney Morning Herald is probably your spot.

Remember how a Whole Foods is coming to Broad Street? Well, Pleasants Hardware will move down the street a piece to make way–to 4402 W. Broad Street, specifically. The previous link also answers a question I’ve long had: the building at 1607 W. Broad Street (south-west corner of Broad and Lombardy) with the “H. A. Pleasants” signage, is, in fact, Pleasants’ original 1915 location.

Looks like Scott’s Addition will house yet another alcohol startup: Buskey Cider hopes to open in the neighborhood next year. With all these breweries and cideries (maybe not a word?), we’re gonna need a few more places to grab a bite to eat and soak up all that booze.

UVA men’s soccer defeated UCLA to win its seventh national championship. I know I’ve got a dedicated sports-related section below, but national championship are big deals!

Tilda Swinton–GQ Woman of the Year

“Well, I was a professional gambler. When I lived in London, there were a couple of years when I didn’t really earn money doing anything else. I mean, I did other things, like I made work, and I was working with Derek Jarman at the time, but the way I made money was putting money on horses.”
