Good morning, RVA: cold…with snow on the horizon (don’t freak out)

A chilly morning, snow on the way, and some sad news for RVA.

Good morning, RVA! I’m sorry to report that it is dang cold outside: 28 °F. Things will warm up as the day continues, but not really. And man, I didn’t want to tell you this on Friday, what with such a beautiful weekend on the horizon, but we’re expecting snow tomorrow. With temperatures hovering around freezing, don’t expect a ton of accumulation. Do expect people to flip their lids.

Stephen F. Austin bounced VCU from the tournament in the first round (or second round, depending on how you count it) in an unnecessarily heartbreaking way.

But it’s not all tears for the Commonwealth: UVA made it past the first weekend and will advance to the Sweet 16 where the Wahoos will face #4 Michigan State on Friday.

Several source are reporting that GWAR front man Dave Brockie was found dead yesterday. GWAR was easily one of the most famous and infamous things ever to emerge from RVA. We’ll post more details as we get them.

As Russia continues to annex Crimea and seize bases in the region, Ukraine has withdrawn it’s military.

GWAR, Me, and the On-rushing Grip of Death: Part 51

In one of my favorite pieces he wrote for us, Dave Brockie talks about his brother’s final struggles with AIDS in the late 1980s.

Over the next few years Landrew had lost pretty much every gay friend and lover he had ever had. They had been doctors and drunks, bell-ringers and book-shop owners. All of them were great people, kind, generous, full of spirit and life. Their deaths seemed so cruel and their lives so useless. It made me want to cram as much life as possible into whatever time I had.
