Good Morning, RVA: A little less soggy

The sun may not come out (today or tomorrow), but bet your bottom dollar we’re almost through with the rain.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 60 °F, and I think we’re done with the rain, y’all! Don’t get me wrong: there’s still a slight chance for some isolated wet weather, and clouds will mostly rule the sky. But! If you like to live dangerously, you can brazenly leave your umbrella at home!

There are a few more quotes and soundbites about minor league baseball, the mayor, and a new stadium floating around today. Skip them all and read this piece by Michael Paul Williams: Nine takeaways from the ballpark debacle. The bit that stabbed at me: “When Steve Elswick, chairman of the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors, notes that the county has to close its libraries on Thursdays, we should be asking: Why are Richmond, Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield served by four separate library systems?” Maybe we’ve fudged the bucket on the Squirrels and minor league baseball for good, but there’s certainly an opportunity to learn some lessons moving forward.

It’s National Doughnut Day, a day when people all across the land descend on their local fried dough shops and make poor but delicious-in-the-moment decisions. In Richmond we call this “Friday.” A couple doughnut shops around town have deals that you may want to take advantage of. Also, I saw this tweet from @FullDRadio and can’t stop wondering if we should start claiming some kind of doughnut ownership due to our water like New York does with their bagels?

Tangier Island is old and fascinating and disappearing into the bay.

The federal government admitted that hackers gained access to millions of current and former government employees’ personal info through a breach of the Office of Personnel Management. The target was social security numbers. Is keeping your SSN secret even a thing? How do you keep something secret that goes on each and every form in your entire life?

VCU picked up a new commit–Coach Wade has sure been working hard over the last couple of months.

• Squirrels picked up the win against Portland yesterday, 4-3, to take the series. They’ll start a quick series with New Hampshire at 7:05 PM.
• Kickers host the Charlotte Independence on Sunday at 5:00 PM. Note the odd day and time! Tickets are available online.
• Nats lost to the Cubs 1-2. They’ve now lost six of the last seven. They’ll try to change that tonight at 7:05 PM as the series with the Cubs continues.

Shovel and Pick: Chef Travis Milton Leaving Comfort to Open a Restaurant of His Own

“I work with Josiah [Lockhart] a lot in the Slow Meat program with Slow Food, about taking meat away as the focus of the plate, so it’s going to be very, very vegetarian-friendly — not by design but just based off of happenstance of what Appalachian culture is,” Milton says. “That was the way I always grew up; we would have a little bit of meat, but we would have 15 different types of vegetables — fresh tomatoes, all kinds of stewed beans — but meat was never the focal point of everything, and that kind of came about via poverty throughout time in Appalachia.”
