Weather! Quiet week ahead, watching next weekend

It’s a quiet morning across Virginia, and this pattern should continue through the majority of the week. Westerly flow in the upper levels of the atmosphere will keep things moving over the next few days. Temperatures will moderate slightly from the recent cold pattern, but we’ll still be below average for the next few days. However, I’m watching something the potential for a White Christmas, too!

It’s a quiet morning across Virginia, and this pattern should continue through the majority of the week. Westerly flow in the upper levels of the atmosphere will keep things moving over the next few days. Temperatures will moderate slightly from the recent cold pattern, but we’ll still be below average for the next few days.

High pressure over the area means that skies Monday will stay clear to partly cloudy, and temperatures will climb from this morning’s low 20s into the mid 30s. Lows tonight will drop back into the mid 20s overnight.

A weak disturbance crosses the area on Tuesday, bringing some extra clouds to the area but otherwise not having much affect on the weather. We missed hitting 40 over the weekend, so Tuesday will mark our first chance at hitting 40 in what will be nine days. Lows Tuesday night will drop into the upper 20s. Maybe – and it’s a BIG maybe – we’ll see a few drops of precipitation

White Christmas? While the quiet pattern of calm weather and mild, but below-average temperatures is going to continue for the rest of this week, the biggest question still lingering regards our chances of a storm developing from Christmas Eve night into Christmas Day. Unlike the last system, where there was a lot of disagreement among the models even only two days out, most of the major models agree that the Mid-Atlantic will see a coastal storm develop during this time frame. Depending on exactly where and when this storm forms, it’s possible this could either be a snow or rain event, or feature some sort of wintry mix. We’re still five days out at this point and it’s hard to stay much about specifics in terms of timing, track, or precipitation type, but if you’ve got travel plans anytime between the 24th and the 26th, or if you’re just pulling for a white Christmas, you need to keep an eye on the weather for later this week.

I’ll have another forecast, including an update on this weekend’s weather, on Wednesday.
