What was once rumored, is now official. Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Virginia will start a home-and-home series in Charlottesville next season before returning to the Stuart C. Siegel Center during the 2014-15 season.

Coach Shaka Smart caught headlines in 2012 when he said, the “best programs in the state are in the CAA. It’s really not even close.” Fans in Charlottesville were not very fond of the comments, but the Cavaliers finished 0-3 against the CAA this season en route to an NIT berth.
The Cavaliers went 20-2 in John Paul Jones Arena including a win over Duke, but their 3-10 record on the road left them out of the NCAA Tournament. Historically, UVA has dominated VCU, but the Rams program has evolved since 1998–the last time the two teams met.

VCU will also play Virginia Tech, Richmond, Old Dominion, and George Mason next season. After moving to the Atlantic 10, the Rams’ 2012-13 schedule was light on match-ups with teams from the Commonwealth, so it is a relief seeing VCU schedule Virginia teams.
