LISTEN: Alice Bowman, Space M.O.M.

She’s clever, she’s fun, she’s sent a spacecraft to Pluto.

Richmond, VA’s very own Alice Bowman is the Missions Operation Manager and group supervisor of the Space Department’s Space Mission Operations Group. Bowman and company have been working hard for over a decade on achieving something that until now had simply not been possible–sending a spacecraft to Pluto!

In 2006, the New Horizons spacecraft blasted off from Florida for a one-way trip to the furthest reaches of our solar system and potentially beyond. Since Pluto is billions of miles from Earth there would be a lot of time spent navigating this craft safely, testing equipment, and finally getting lots of data during the approach. While most of us have spent the majority of the past decade working on things here on Earth, Bowman and company have had their minds much much further away.

I had an opportunity to chat about everything from Richmond, Virginia (Alice is from here!) to Pluto with Alice Bowman recently. She believes in hard work and holding on to childhood dreams to better understand the world we have here and the vast amounts that we still have left to know.
