Last night some of the RVANews crew headed over to the Science Museum to rub elbows (figuratively this time – I hear that was LITERALLY happening last month’s crowded venue) with Richmond’s biggest social media users/fans/enthusiasts.
The evening started with snackies, drinks, and chats before heading into the IMAX for a panel discussion on “New Media and the News.” Panelists included:
- Jason Roop of Style Weekly
- John Sarvay of Floricane and Buttermilk & Molasses
- Ryan Nobles of NBC12
- Rachel DePompa of NBC12
- Ian Graham of RVAMag
- Aaron Kremer of Richmond BizSense
Overall, we thought it went really well. Interesting points were raised, a little yelling took place (specifically involving a comment about Rush Limbaugh), and SOME people REALLY enjoyed the open bar.
A few topics that came up during the discussion:
- Is it possible to make money directly from social media?
- Does the use of social media harm the integrity of a news source?
- How do ethics play out in social media?
- What’s the difference between news and gossip?
- What affect does social media have on “traditional” media?

Am I the only one who doesn’t want to read hundreds of 1 sentence twitters to find out how the event went? It’s not really good news coverage after the fact.
