Last night some of the RVANews crew headed over to the Science Museum to rub elbows (figuratively this time – I hear that was LITERALLY happening last month’s crowded venue) with Richmond’s biggest social media users/fans/enthusiasts.

The evening started with snackies, drinks, and chats before heading into the IMAX for a panel discussion on “New Media and the News.” Panelists included:

Overall, we thought it went really well. Interesting points were raised, a little yelling took place (specifically involving a comment about Rush Limbaugh), and SOME people REALLY enjoyed the open bar.

A few topics that came up during the discussion:

  • Is it possible to make money directly from social media?
  • Does the use of social media harm the integrity of a news source?
  • How do ethics play out in social media?
  • What’s the difference between news and gossip?
  • What affect does social media have on “traditional” media?

For a complete rundown of what went on, (including banter, arguing, and even pictures) feast your eyeballs on the twitterfeed over to your right. Or for a great play-by-play of what was specifically said on the panel, I’d suggest you check out g33kgurrl‘s tweets – she did a great job keeping track of everything that went down.

For those of you that were there, how did you think it all went? Anything you wish they had discussed but didn’t?
