Richmond’s homicide rate not looking good

NBC12 is reporting that Richmond’s suffered 27 homicides so far in 2009. There were 32 in all of 2008. Violent crime has gone up 5%, and overall crime has gone up 6%. Yowzahs.

According to NBC12, Police Chief Bryan Norwood “believes the increase in crime is in line with national trends, due in part to the economy. What’s different about Richmond – is that the city appeared to have an unusually successful 2008.”

What do you guys think about this? Were things unusually calm last year, or are people just losing their damn minds these days?
