There’s no shortage of good stuff going on this week geared to those of the maternal persuasion. If it’s up to you to plan the events for the big day, try one of these on for size:
True, not a Mother’s Day-specific event, but you try and find me a mother that wouldn’t enjoy a stroll through one of Richmond’s prettiest areas paired with a few little splurges here and there. Participating merchants will have food and discounted merchandise out for your perusal – look for the yellow table cloths! Saturday, May 9th, all day, free (well, except for what it costs to actually buy things).
Again, not a Mother’s Day-specific event. But it’s the perfect event to either enjoy as a family, OR the perfect place for Dad to take the kids so Mom can get a nap already. It promises lots of crafts to enjoy and, of course, strawberries. Saturday, May 9th, 12pm, Fox Elementary School at 2300 Hanover Avenue, free!
Picture it: itty-bitty sandwiches, pretty tea cups, COSTUMES! It will take Ma back to the days of dress up and tea parties. Also includes a tour of the mansion. C’mon, make her feel like a real lady. Saturday, May 9th, 2pm to 3:30pm, Maymont Mansion Lawn, $25 per ticket ($20 for members). Call 804-358-7166, ext. 329 for more info.
4. Mommie Dearest at Movieland
When I saw this on the schedule for Movies and Mimosas, I was so proud of those Bow-Tie folks. They could have easily gone with something featuring a less-crazy mother, but they just went for it. In case you’re not familiar with this film, it gives the story of Joan Crawford’s life from her adopted daughter’s point of view. And her point of view is that her mother is batsh*t crazy. A must-see. Sunday, May 10th, 11am, 1301 N. Boulevard, $5.50 general admission, $4.50 with your Criterion Club Card (mimosas cost extra).
5. Museum District House & Garden Tour
What Richmond mother wouldn’t love to spend an afternoon oggling at crazy/beautiful houses? The ten houses featured on the tour have been selected for their “architectural beauty, attention to detail and historic quality.” Yes, please! Sunday, May 10th, 1pm to 6pm, $20 in advance, $25 the day of the tour. Go here to buy tickets.
