1. Folk Festival. A highlight of the year for the City and its inhabitants, the Richmond Folk Festival is poised to expand your mind. Go here for all the information you could ever want. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Browns Island-ish, FREE.
2. Richmond Zine Fest. Last year featured 45 vendors from all over Virginia and the US, two workshops, readings by noted zinesters Ariel Gore and China Martens, and over 250 people attended. What is a “Zine Fest” you ask? A zine fest is a gathering where zine creators, small comic creators, small press creators, and zine distros come together to sell and/or trade their creations. There are workshops concerning zines and other DIY skills or matters, as well as zinesters reading from their zines or books. Saturday, October 11, 2008, 11-5 at the Gay Community Center of Richmond, 1407 Sherwood Ave, FREE (with free coffee on hand, and vegan food available for purchase at a small price).
3. Drag Racing. There’s a big drag racing event this weekend in Petersburg. Ross can’t stop talking about it…”The Virginia NHRA Nationals“?!? Anyhow, word is it’s a big deal in the Drag Racing Community. I have no doubt that a trip to Petersburg to watch a day’s worth of world class drag racing (300 mph!!) is worth its weight in Buzz and Ned’s BBQ. Go here for event details and ticket prices.
4. Cordero at ADA Gallery. Saturday, 8:30-12, 5$ Saturday night famous out of towners’ Cordero, less famous but EXTREMELY talented in-towner Gull, and Fight the Big Bull find their way into Ada Gallery. Another, sure-fire, shooting fish in the barrel, sweetness and tightness guaranteed event.
5. Brazilian Night at Capital Ale House. Folk Festival after party featuring Capoeira performance by Grupo Resistencia, Brazilian music by Soul Brazil, and tight DJ jams by DJ Leo Prescott. A sure fire good time…..maybe, just maybe, Capitol Ale House will serve Caipirinha’s. Saturday, 9-2, Downtown Capitol Ale House, $10 beforehand, $12 at that door.
