1. Movieland at Boulevard Square Opening Night!

FINALLY. Remember a couple weeks ago when I got an excluuuuuuuuusive preview of the new movie theater? Well, come Friday evening, Movieland at Boulevard Square is opening its doors. Shows this weekend include the Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience, Street Fighter, and Wendy and Lucy. Go here for ticket information. And make sure to sign up for the Criterion Club AND enter to win free movie tickets for a year. I know, WTF?

2. Richmond Kids’ Expo and Babies Too!

Don’t let the name of the event fool you into thinking that kids and/or babies can be purchased here. This is basically one of those events where vendors try to get you to buy stuff by throwing free things at you. Who doesn’t love that? This event apparently is the largest children’s expo showcasing products and services for children ages pre-birth (is that an age? really?) through pre-teen. They’re also promising hands-on children’s activities, contests, and prize drawings. The forecast shows rain on Saturday, so this is a good option for you and the wee ones. Saturday, February 28th, 10am to 5pm, inside Richmond International Raceway, 600 Laburnum Avenue, FREE!

3. Davenport North American Open Squash Championship

I *also* don’t know anything about squash, BUT apparently this is a huge deal for this sport that I’m told is somewhat like racquetball. 18 different countries will be represented with 8 of the top 10 pros playing in what is regarded as one of squash’s top 5 tournaments in the world. Saturday, February 28th, 3 to 7pm, University of Richmond’s Millhiser Gym. Click here for ticket information.

4. Richmond Symphony’s Hollywood Night

I’ll be honest, this is probably the only performance put on by the Richmond Symphony during which I wouldn’t fall asleep. That’s more of a dig on my personal tastes and attention span than the talent of those wonderful musicians. But I digress. They will be performing music from some of Hollywood’s favorite films: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, and more. Saturday, February 28th, 8pm, Landmark Theater, 6 N. Laurel Street, $30-$60. Call Ticketmaster at (804) 262-8003 for more information.

5. StinkFest Cheese Class at River City Cellars

The name of this event is the main reason I’m including it on this list. I sense the term “StinkFest” will soon be making its way into my everyday conversation… and YOURS. Join the folks at River City Cellar for an evening trying out 6 super-smelly, ultra-funky cheeses from France, Spain, Italy, and even the Old Dominion herself. Along with the tasting, you’ll get help figuring out how to serve them and what to pair them with. Monday, March 2nd, 6:30pm to 8pm, 2931 W. Cary Street, $35 (must be prepaid as seating is limited). Call (804) 355-1375 to reserve your spot.
