The Commonwealth Transportation Board issued its Six Year Improvement Program draft last week, highlighting more than 900 projects that the agency recommends for funding by Governor Bob McDonnell’s transportation legislation throughout fiscal years 2012-2017. Several of the projects directly affect the Short Pump area.

One proposal includes widening more than 4.5 miles of Interstate 64 from two to four lanes between Route 288 and Ashland Road (Route 623) in eastern Goochland County, just west of Short Pump.

Another calls for a study on the relocation of a mile and a half of Springfield Road, just north of Nuckols Road. The current winding roadway has seen a whole host of accidents, several of which have been fatal over the past several years along the most dangerous stretch near Echo Lake Park.

The recommended projects total a staggering $10.4 billion, more than $8 billion of which will go towards VDOT projects. The remaining $2.3 billion will go to light rail public transportation projects.
