A man in his mid-20s was electrocuted early Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m. when the trimming device he was using to prune a tree in a Far West End subdivision touched an adjacent electric line, instantly electrocuting the man and setting him on fire, according to Henrico Police.

The almost 20,000 volt line caused the 27-year-old man to burst into flames. Rescue crews pulled the man from the tree he was attached to and attempted resuscitation unsuccessfully. He was pronounced dead on the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The man was said to be experienced in tree trimming, but had just begun work at a new company, Williams Landscaping & Tree Service, based in Madison, Virginia, his hometown. The incident took place in the 1500 block of Timbercrest Lane between Lauderdale Drive and Gayton Road. State investigators will now work to determine whether any safety violations were committed, such as a regulation that states that Dominion Virginia Power must be contacted when working within ten feet of overhead utility lines.
