There will not be a primary election held in the City of Richmond on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. Only one candidate filed for each office for which a primary was called. In such cases, that candidate becomes the party nominee and their name automatically appears on the ballot for the November general election.

The next election in the City of Richmond will be a general election on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. The polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Items on the ballot will be state Senate, House of Delegates and Circuit Court Clerk.

The filing deadline for independent candidates for these offices is Tuesday, August 23, 2011. The deadline to register to vote or to update your voter registration for this election is Monday, October 17, 2011. Absentee voting will commence no later than Friday, September 23, 2011. The last day to apply to vote absentee through the mail is Tuesday, November 1, 2011. The last day to apply to vote absentee in person is Saturday, November 5, 2011. Some voters, however, may be able to absentee vote on Monday due to an emergency. Voters who anticipate needing to vote curbside voting on election day should notify the Office of the General Registrar (646-5950) in advance if possible.
