Church Hill is down river and up a hill from the end of the 8-mile stretch that is the Falls of the James. For years, if you needed to be rescued near the beginning of the falls, you might have to wait until the Richmond Fire Units could get there.

Not any more. The City of Richmond started a second unit out of the Forest Hill Avenue station. NBC12’s Sunni Blevins met with Lt. Carroll Smith of the Swift Water Rescue Team:

The original rescue team still operates out of the Rescue 1 fire station in Church Hill, but a second team is now based out of the fire station on Forest Hill Avenue not too far from several key areas of the James River Park. Rescue 1 is the only dive team, but that station is far from the westernmost parcels areas of the James in Richmond.

“So far this year, we went in service May 1st, and we’ve run 25 river calls already,” Smith said.
