After a nail-biting 19 rounds of spelling word after word, Aditya Kannoth, a sixth-grader at Moody Middle School, won first place in the Henrico County Public Schools District-Wide Spelling Bee for the fourth year in a row. Kannoth spelled “surrealism” to become the spelling bee champion.

The runner-up, Tejas Muthusamy, a third-grader at Rivers Edge Elementary went out after misspelling the word “palfrey.”

The event took place Monday night at Hungary Creek Middle School.

There were 56 elementary and middle schools participating in the competition, meaning Kannoth beat out 55 other worthy contestants.

Kannoth now qualifies for the Richmond Times-Dispatch Regional Spelling Bee, which will take place on March 10th at 1:00 p.m. at the Library of Virginia. If Kannoth is unable to attend, Muthusamy will go in his place.
