From a new pizza joint that just opened to a Mexican restaurant that’s coming soon, plus a new tenant for the former Short Pump S&K store, a cancer research benefit and a new scholarship program, the Short Pump area is abuzz with activity this week.

The Breeden Company has announced several tenant changes in the Towne Center West shopping center. A current salon, Ahead of Hair, is expanding and has leased 1,395 additional square feet in the center, according to Brenda Martin, Vice President of the company’s Real Estate division. Plaza Azteca, a Mexican restaurant, has leased 6,507 square feet and plans to open by December 1, 2010 next to the future Blue Ridge Mountain Sports location, Martin said.

Down the road in the Promenade Shops, Extreme Pizza has opened next to Daily Grind Coffeehouse & Cafe. The franchise is the first in the West End and second in Richmond. The original location opened on VCU’s Monroe Park Campus several years ago.

The former S&K Menswear retail store, next to the former corporate headquarters on West Broad Street at Interstate 64, will soon reopen as a TD Ameritrade brokerage location. The headquarters next door will soon undergo a partial demolition and remodeling to become a future Stratford University campus.

Mondial Assistance has just announced a new international travel scholarship program called ScholarTrips. The program will give four $2,500 scholarships to middle and high school students in the Richmond area for study abroad. An additional scholarship will be awarded to a child or grandchild of a Mondial employee. Applications are due April 5. ScholarTrips replaces a previous program called Access Abroad, which was limited to Henrico high school students and children of Mondial associates.

The First Community Bank Innsbrook location will participate in the Show Your Spirit fundraiser for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The event is planned to take place at the office on March 19th from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. There will be food and coupons from Ruby Tuesday’s, door prizes, including two tickets for the Virginia Derby at the Colonial Downs horse racing track, and giveaways. In addition, the opening round of the NCAA Tournament will be shown on the bank’s televisions. Residents can also show their support for a loved one that has passed away from cancer by donating money in honor or memory of that person. A paper basketball will be displayed in Innsbrook Financial Center bearing that person’s name.
