Ryan McGinness: Studio Visit – Jan 25 – Oct 19
You may know the large, colorful painting Art History Is Not Linear (VMFA) on display near our front entrance. The 16-panel work, which includes 200 logo-like images based on works in the museum’s collection, was created by Ryan McGinness (born and raised in Virginia Beach) specifically for VMFA. This exhibition explores McGinness’s creative process for this commissioned work, which has become part of the museum’s identity since it was installed in 2010.
The first gallery provides a virtual visit to McGinness’s studio practice with the second displaying a selection of the inspirational objects in the painting alongside the artist’s sketches and final icons. A final section shows some of McGinness’s early works. An exciting array of education programs complementing the exhibition will encourage young artists to participate in their own process of exploration and interpretation of objects in the museum’s collection. Exhibition is free. Learn more. [via VMFA]
