There have been many emails sent my way about walls and vegetation being torn down on the New Mark Corp. property where the City of Richmond has approved a new street to connect Tredgar Street with Second Street behind Tredegar Iron Works.

The area also has a proposed amphitheater on the New Market Corp. property at 2nd Street, in the location of the very popular Richmond Folk Festival. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s Will Jones:

NewMarket Corp. did not need a permit last week when it cleared trees and brush on land it owns below South Second Street in downtown Richmond, city officials confirmed Thursday.

However, the company may have needed — and it obtained after the fact — a permit to demolish a section of an old wall along the unrestored James River and Kanawha Canal.
