Preparations are underway for the first annual Relay for Life of Short Pump, to be held Friday, June 18 in Innsbrook. A special Luminaria Ceremony to be held during the event will remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have survived. Luminaria will be lit near Innsbrook Pavilion on June 18 at 9:30 p.m. to represent these individuals.

“Each luminaria represents the life of someone who has battled cancer,” said Christine Thrash, Relay For Life of Short Pump co-chairperson. “It is a beautiful sight when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track.”

Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at a gathering area with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay celebrates people who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost and provides participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease.

Prior to the Luminaria Ceremony, the Survivors Lap will kick off the first Relay For Life event in Short Pump on June 18 at 7:00 p.m. as survivors will circle the track, surrounded by friends and family cheering them on. A Survivor Reception will immediately follow the opening lap.
