The Richmond Police Department is investigating the death of a 13-month-old child who was left unattended in a van today for several hours.

Police began this death investigation after receiving a medical emergency call in the 2700 block of Garland Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m.
Keishawn L. Whitfield, 23 an employee of the Yellow Brick Road Day Care & Learning Center discovered the child after returning to the van. Whitfield is in police custody and will be charged with felony child neglect. Whitfield resides in the 2700 block of Garland Avenue

The Richmond Police Department is in consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office regarding further charges.

The cause and manner of death will be determined by Medical Examiner’s Office. This investigation is ongoing.
