Construction is now underway on a new elementary school scheduled to open for the 2013-2014 school year. Development on the project, located across from the northwest entrance of Wyndham and the Goochland County line on Pouncey Tract Road, was scheduled to be started back in the spring, but was delayed several months.

Crews have started to clear the almost 30 acre site, comprised mainly of pasture, over the past several weeks. A single family home on the property was also recently demolished, which can be seen in the photos below.

The Henrico Board of Supervisors approved construction plans for the 80,000 square foot, 37 classroom school last October.

The elementary school will aim to ease overcrowding at others nearby, including Shady Grove, Twin Hickory and River’s Edge. New home construction in the area, along with plans to annex Wyndham, announced last year by developer HHHunt, would only add to the problem over the next several years, according to county planning officials.

The new facility would be able to comfortably accommodate up to 700 students.

Henrico officials estimate the entire project’s price tag at around $27 million, with between $12 and $15 million going towards construction of the building itself. It will be funded in part by a 2005 bond referendum approved by voters for new schools and other public facilities.

The school site was purchased in 2006 for $3.8 million.

A rendering of the school and photos of the clearing process can be seen below.
