Thursday, February 11, 2010: In their latest press announcement, Richmond’s Flying Squirrels stepped up the theatrics and held a grand event for a packed house at the Historic Byrd Theatre.

The event commenced with students from Bon Air Elementary School singing their version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and was followed by the unveiling of 20 pieces of art depicting “Why Baseball is FUNN” drawn by local elementary school students. This art will be blown up into 4 x 9 panels and used to decorate the concourse of the renovated Diamond.

Next, the Squirrels welcomed their healthcare partner, HCA Virginia Health System. Dr. Doug Cutter of CJW Sports Medicine introduced the sports medicine physicians from both CJW Medical Center and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital who will help care for the team. HCA Virginia Health System and their 7 local hospitals (Chippeham, Henrico Doctors’, Johnston-Willis, John Randolph, Parham Doctors’, Retreat Doctors, and Spotsylvania) were one of the first major sponsors of the new baseball team.

The crowd also welcomed NUTZY, the official team mascot. The ferocious and fun squirrel entered the hall to many cheers and a fanfare of confetti.

In a creative effort to engage local media outlets, sportscasters from WRIC, WTVR and Sports Radio 950 modeled the new team uniforms—three very stylish combinations of scarlet red, black, and squirrel grey.

To conclude the occasion, local singer and songwriter Susan Greenbaum led the crowd in a rousing rendition of her own “Flight Song” inspired by the new team.
