Due to some permit issues, the planned concrete ramp for wheelchair access to the James River at Reedy Creek was delayed until next week. It was scheduled to be built this week, but delayed by a permit issue.

In terms of getting projects approved, this one has moved along very fast.  I’m sure the City of Richmond is very willing to work with corporate partners like Dominion to make a project like this one come together.

The steps are planned to be 10 feet wide and the adjoining ramp 5 feet, according to the blueprints. The takeout will 78 feet long and should reach into the water at most depths.

For more information, see my article on Richmond.com:

The need for improved river access for individuals with disabilities is growing and with a $5,000 grant from the Dominion Foundation and another $5,000 from the James River Outdoor Coalition, volunteers from Dominion, JROC and the James River Park System are scheduled to construct a concrete ramp for wheelchair access to the James River.

The ramp – the first of its kind in the Richmond area – will replace existing steps from the river to the top of the bank at the Reedy Creek takeout, located across from the JRPS visitor center. The ramp will make it possible for disabled individuals to more easily launch or takeout canoes and kayaks.
