David Fary of Riverside Outfitters is at the James River almost every day of the week, and he often notices things that many of us may miss at a casual glance. But something happens when the river levels get low — things get exposed.

Fary sent me a photo of a structure that has become visible in a sandy area in the river at The Wetlands and said that many people have noticed it and wondered what it was.

According to James River Park manager Ralph White, the concrete structure has been there for decades and is related to an old sewage system that was last used in the late 1960s.

The structure is about six inches thick. It is only in view from a sandy area at The Wetlands when the water levels in the James River are below about four feet.

The area that is now The Wetlands was once a sewage lagoon, among the many uses for the land over the years. The L-shaped structure is related to that time frame. White said he didn’t know what function the structure served.

Anyone know of any other interesting structures exposed by low water levels?
