Family members of the Chesterfield County teen killed at Huguenot Flatwater Sunday are speaking out about possible motives for the murder, and some allege that it could have been gang activity.
CBS6’s Angela Pellerano attended the teen’s vigil Tuesday and the funeral Wednesday night and spoke with family:
Police say Hernandez-Gonzales was shot in the head at point blank range.
“There’s something that’s weird. You ask yourself, a guy who has a lot of friends and was loved, one night he was shot out of nowhere?” says Hernandez-Gonzales’ distant cousin, Kevin Estrada Hernandez.
CBS 6 has learned that hours before Gonzales’ death, he was last seen at the Cultural Center of India. Friends say he was attending a party there.
At around 12:30 a.m. police say a fight broke out inside, possibly involving members of a gang called Sur 13. Sur 13 is a rival of the Latin Kings gang.
Friends say Gonzales was not involved in gangs, but said he was friends with members of the Latin Kings.
In January, 2010, 11 students were arrested after a fight involving both gangs at L.C. Bird High School. Friends say that Gonzales was involved in that fight.
