On Wednesday at approximately 2:30 a.m. a motorist was shot by a VCU police officer. It happened after the motorist got out of his car wielding a knife. The Richmond Times-Dispatch has the story:
John M. Bennett, VCU’s senior vice president for finance and administration, said campus officers were among those to respond after the suspect became uncooperative and the Richmond officer requested backup. The driver got out of his car and moved toward police while wielding a knife, and one Richmond officer and one VCU officer opened fire, striking the driver, Bennett said.

At 2:27 a.m., a Richmond Police officer initiated a traffic stop in the 800 block of West Broad Street. Nathan Randolph, 55, of Richmond was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Randolph exited his vehicle against police commands and was armed with a large knife. The officers, which included a Virginia Commonwealth University Police officer, gave several commands for Randolph to drop the knife. Despite these commands, Randolph aggressively advanced toward the officers with the knife, and was shot several times.
Randolph was transported to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the case is investigated. The Richmond Police Department’s Force Investigation Team is investigating the incident in cooperation with the Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
