OK, while paddling at Presquile Island, I just about freaked out at the site of a lime green monster I saw floating along the banks.
It turns out it was the fruit of an osage-orange, or horse apple. I wrote about these recently after finding them on an island near Huguenot Flatwater.
Finding them at Presquile was different. I knew what I was looking at, but the size of the fruit was about four times what I’d seen before. They were at least the size of a cantaloupe. There were multiple trees along the banks of the island and we saw plenty more huge fruits floating or hanging on in the trees. I snagged two of them and tried to convince Andy Thompson (who was paddling with me) that this was amazing. He wasn’t as impressed as I hoped, but my kids were at least amazed.
