After further investigation into a falling death from the concrete tower access to Belle Isle Saturday, detectives and the Medical Examiner’s Office have determined the fall was accidental, according to a release Monday from the Richmond Police Department.

At approximately 4 p.m. Saturday, a patrol officer saw Timothy S. May, 44, of the 1000 block of Lavon Drive of Richmond, possibly drinking in public at 21st Street and Riverside Drive. As the officer approached May to speak with him, May climbed over the stairwell railing of the concrete tower and tried to drop down to the other side, according to police.

At this point, May lost his grip with one hand and, despite the officer’s efforts to pull him back, May fell approximately 29 feet to the ground below. He was taken to VCU Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.
