Lewis Ginter’s “Butterflies Live!” doesn’t open until Friday, May 22nd, but Lakeside Market is making an effort to create a buzz about the springtime favorite a few days ahead of time:

To help kick-off the “Butterflies Live!” exhibit for Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s 25th anniversary, the Lakeside Farmers’ Market will have special activities at the Lakeside Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 16th from 8:00 a. m. til noon.

  • Katelyn, “The Butterfly Fairy”, from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, will be at the market with a special butterfly craft for the children to make.
  • Mrs. Linda McBride, Brookland District Representative on the Henrico County School Board, will be on hand to talk about her Monarch butterfly project.
  • Nicole Schermerhorn, from Lavender Fields, will have educational materials available about butterfly habitat.
  • Lakeside Elementary and Holladay Elementary School students have painted murals of butterflies that will adorn the fence at the market.
  • Local artists will create butterfly sculptures from recycled materials that will be placed at various points along Lakeside Avenue to create a butterfly “gateway” to the Botanical Garden.
  • Many of the businesses along Lakeside Avenue will feature butterfly decor to participate in the fun.
