A For Rent sign posted at Gayton Road and Cambridge Drive in Short Pump is causing outrage. Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia (HOME) spotted a photo of a For Rent sign advertising housing to “whites only” earlier today. The sign was photographed on June 30th after a complaint from an area driver.

HOME director Amy Nelson called the number written on the sign, posing as a prospective tenant, several times. Contact was finally made with the landlords on July 6th.

Nelson then called back on the 14th, inquiring about the “whites only” comment on the sign, which is a violation of Virginia equal housing laws. A male who answered the phone would neither confirm nor deny the verbiage was written by him or his family.

Although the possibility that a passerby edited the sign exists, Nelson says she is fairly certain this was not the case.
