Henrico officials have withdrawn a proposal to build a new county maintenance facility adjacent to the future Twin Hickory Park, citing concerns from residents who say it’s an awkward fit for the future park, which is adjacent to both Deep Run High School and the Twin Hickory Area Library.

The Twin Hickory site would have been constructed off Twin Hickory Road on a site that backs up to Shady Grove Road, and was one of several proposed locations. The most popular option was to build the facility off Ford’s Country Lane near the Henrico County Landfill, an area with more complementary uses and less residential development. County officials didn’t specify whether the site, near the Interstate 295/Nuckols Road interchange was still in the running.

The storage and maintenance facility is needed, according to Parks and Recreation officials, to alleviate overcrowding at the current maintenance facility on Woodman Road used to house vehicles and equipment that maintain more than 385 acres of fields at county parks.

There’s no word on when the final location will be selected or when the county plans to break ground on the building, but $1.5 million has already been earmarked for the project when the time comes.
