Registration is still open for the 6th Annual HandsOn Day this coming Saturday, October 19, 2013: “1 Day. 1000 Volunteers. People at the Center of Change.”
Imagine how much better Richmond could be if we all spent just 4 hours doing something together for the community. Join a thousand other volunteers across the metro region this October to make a difference in Richmond on one of many organized volunteer opportunities.
There are a number of volunteer opportunities in the area:
- Scrub Down Swan Lake – Clean trash out of Swan lake, Paint picnic shelters and benches, Remove invasive species, Repair retaining wall surrounding the lake perimeter
- Fun at the Farmlet – at William Byrd Community House. Harvest produce and bag and refrigerate appropriate items, Prepare new planting beds and plant late season crops, Weed, mulch, water, and compost, Rake leaves, pick up debris, and sweep sidewalks
- A Clean Scene – At the Virginia Center for Architecture. Dust window sills, Clean windows, Wash marks off the walls
- Clean Fan Parks – Fan District Association. trim bushes, pull weeds and plant new vegetation, lay and replace mulch, pick up trash, shovel/rake sand
- In Where the Bears Are – At Maymont. Prune and remove overgrown vegetation in the bear habitat
- Humphrey Needs a Haircut – Humphrey Calder Community Center. Weed and remove invasive species from playground areas, Trim and maintain plant growth around park and community center spaces, Help with the upkeep of playground equipment and athletic fields
- The Big Byrd Clean Up – Byrd Theater. Reorganize equipment in the attic and basement, Dust storage areas, Sweep storage areas, Purge unneeded items and boxes, Properly store and label bins and boxes, Clean up litter and tidy outside area surrounding the theater
- Carytown Clean – Byrd Theater. Weed and mulch tree wells, Pick up trash along the street and sidewalks of Carytown
- Fall Spruce Up – Fan Free CLinic. Deep clean clinic including cleaning windows inside and out, Weed and mulch various flower beds and plant new bulbs, Organize new charts and other admin tasks, Clean parking lots to improve the patient’s experiences as they approach the building
