Eight Honored With Outstanding Youth Awards

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY – Six youths and two adults were honored May 7 during the 26th Annual Outstanding Youth Awards program at L.C. Bird High School. The youths received awards in the following categories: courage, compassion, leadership and service. Adults were honored for fortitude, mentorship and service. The first ever Young Adult Achievement Award also was presented this year. The awards are sponsored by the Chesterfield County Youth Planning and Development Department, the Youth Services Citizen Board and the Midlothian Kiwanis Club. Courage David Abraham, a student at Cosby High School, volunteers with the Manchester Volunteer Rescue Squad and, as an Eagle Scout, encourages other youths to abstain from drugs and alcohol. Carol Cortez, a student at L.C. Bird High School, created a mentorship program for girls at her school. Compassion D’Angelo Burns, a student at Chester Middle School, uses his sign-language skills to sign at many local church services. Service Jared McAnelly, a student at Matoaca High School, attends firefighter training, volunteers at the Phillips Volunteer Fire Station, and performs yard work for those who cannot do it themselves. Leadership Dianté Ryals, a student at Meadowbrook High School, is president of the W.E.B. Du Bois Honor Society and led the group to volunteer at the Central Virginia Food Band, the Salvation Army and the Chester YMCA. Young Adult Achievement Award Thomas Allen, a graduating senior at Manchester High School, has advocated for students with disabilities and served as a role model for other students in the school’s special education program. Adult Winners Sherry Harris has served the youths of Chesterfield County for the past 10 years, volunteering with the Salem Church Middle School PTA and the L.C. Bird High School PTSA. Tim Holt, has served as a volleyball coach in Chesterfield County for 20 years and is the founder of Unique Kids, an organization that provides activities and camps for children with autism.

Courage
