Deep Run High School students are gearing up to get in the groove at the fifth annual 27-Hour Deep Run Marathon Dance on Friday, March 18 through Saturday, March 19. Nearly 700 students have signed up for the overnight event held to benefit 12 different local charities. Organized by a student committee, daylong and overnight events are scheduled including a limbo competition, air band competitions and a dance-off.

Over the course of the last four years, the students of Deep Run have raised more than $451,000.000 for local charities. Last year’s event raised $137,000, and the school hopes to break its record this year.

To participate in the dance, each student is required to collect $100 in pledge money. Proceeds will support Shady Grove Family YMCA, Positive Vibe Foundation, Coordinators 2 Inc., Fan Free Clinic, ReeseStrong Foundation Inc., William Byrd Community House, Camp Kesem, Jack and Abby Neonatal Foundation, Cystic Fybrosis Foundation, Wings of Hope Ranch, Gerry Bertier Foundation, and Children Incorporated.

“These students are learning a very important, intangible lesson and that is the importance of giving back to your community,” says David Kern, Marathon Dance co-director and exceptional education teacher. “This is not necessarily done through monetary donations but through understanding the importance of volunteerism.

They are also learning how to work together as a team, debate important issues, and the aspects that go into planning, organizing, and implementing a large scale event like this.”

Downtown Short Pump editor Trevor Dickerson, who has produced the opening and closing videos for the dance for the past five years and is an Deep Run alumni, will be on hand for the entire dance to film and produce a closing video.

Last year’s closing video can be seen below.
