At 4:40 a.m. April 2, 1865, some 14,000 Union soldiers moved forward in the chilly gloom toward the Confederate fortifications six miles southwest of Petersburg. Less than an hour later, the American flag flew over the Confederate line following one of the most important battles of the entire Civil War: the engagement that led directly to the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. One week later, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House and our nation began the long process of healing. Join Pamplin Historical Park historians as they cross the same bloody ground contested by the blue and gray 144 years ago. Beginning at 5:30 a.m. (no daylight savings time in 1865!) this unique tour provides visitors with the same atmospheric perspective experienced by the soldiers on both sides who fought at the Petersburg Breakthrough. Unlike the soldiers in 1865, tour participants will enjoy a hot breakfast following the tour at the Park’s Hardtack & Coffee Cafe.

The tour and breakfast are free to Park Members and $10 per person for all others. The fee also includes admission to the Park. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Pamplin Historical Park at 804-861-2408 or by e-mail at memberservices@pamplinpark.org.
