The family and friends of Jerry A. Nutter gathered at Belle Isle Labor Day morning to clean trash from the James River in the memory a man who died while whitewater kayaking in Richmond.

Nutter, a Dinwiddie County man, died while kayaking with his son and another friend Dec. 29, 2007, at Pipeline Rapids in downtown Richmond. His daughter, Melissa Nutter Archer, said that at least 45 people came out for the annual event. Many were friends who signed up well in advance, but there were a few who saw the volunteer effort and joined in Archer said. Participants got a t-shirt and a free lunch from Qdoba Mexican Grill.

Archer said that she is trying to get non-profit status for the charity efforts being made in the name of her father. She said he loved kayaking and being out in nature, but he was also very involved in feeding the needy and would donate time and money at Christmas time to feed people in Petersburg every year.  She said she would love to carry on that tradition for him.
