Chesterfield County Government Complex Partially Evacuated

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA-A 500-foot radius around the Chesterfield County Police Department headquarters, located at the intersection of Iron Bridge and Lori Roads, was evacuated for approximately three hours today as a precautionary measure. Shortly before 10 a.m., someone wishing to dispose of some flash powder, a potentially explosive substance, brought it to the Police Department’s central front desk. The police officer at the desk contacted the county’s Emergency Communications Center, and a mobile Incident Command post was activated by Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services and other county personnel. Some nearby offices were evacuated, and several streets were closed to traffic, including a portion of Iron Bridge Road, also known as Route 10. Virginia State Police explosive ordinance disposal officers removed the powder with a robotic device and took it elsewhere for proper disposal. The regional effort also included the F.B.I. and the Richmond Police Department. Anyone finding any potentially hazardous or explosive substance or device is advised not to touch it, and not to transport it. Instead, call the county’s Emergency Communications Center routine number, 748-1251, or call 911 if there is an emergency situation involving these materials.
