What to expect: VCU hosts Towson

After blowing a double figure lead to the lukewarm Northeastern Huskies on Saturday, the Rams need a confidence boosting “teaching” game more than ever. Towson on the other hand is likely dreading their trip to the Siegel Center where they are 0-8. If the Rams’ offense can perform at a level anywhere near its potential, VCU will likely cover the 24.5 point spread.

  • What: VCU Rams (20-5, 11-2) host Towson Tigers (1-24, 1-12)
  • Where: Stuart C. Siegel Center
  • When: Wednesday, February 8th at 7:30pm

The Rundown

After blowing a double figure lead to the lukewarm Northeastern Huskies on Saturday, the Rams need a confidence boosting “teaching” game more than ever. Towson on the other hand is likely dreading their trip to the Siegel Center where they are 0-8. If the Rams’ offense can perform at a level anywhere near its potential, VCU will likely cover the 24.5 point spread.

Towson’s struggles in the Siegel Center

  • Towson’s eight losses on Broad street have been by an average of 25.5 points.
  • Towson lost 112-53 in the Siegel Center in January 2010.
  • VCU has scored 90+ points in half of Towson’s visits to “The Stu”.

The Team

It needs to be said…again…Towson is terrible. Offensively the Tigers are a mess. They rank 344th out of 345 in effective field goal percentage and 345th out of 345 in turnover offensive percentage. The Rams “HAVOC” defense leads the nation in steals and the Tigers turned the ball over 24 times on January 25th. With the Rams playing at home there is the potential for 25+ Towson turnovers.

The Star

Senior forward Robert Nwankwo is in the unfortunate position of being a talented player on a team that can’t piece together wins. Nwankwo averages an impressive 11.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game. A constant double-double threat, he scored 16 points, grabbed thirteen boards, picked up three steals, and blocked two shots in the January 25th meeting.

The Prediction

Ken Pomeroy picks VCU to win 73-45 with a 99% chance of victory. Towson is playing their best basketball of the season but after losing 41-straight games, Towson’s best just isn’t good enough.

Towson Profile

  • Location: Towson, MD
  • Conference: CAA
  • All time series: VCU leads 17-1
  • Last meeting: VCU won 67-42 at Towson.
