If the weather holds out, the Richmond Flying Squirrels make their debut tonight versus the Bowie Baysox in the opener of a four game away series. If not tonight, Friday should for sure see the first game of the season against the team that might become our arch rivals.
The Baysox have a history of being a decent team. They have only had one losing season in the past 6 years, and won the Southern Division of the Eastern League in 2008. Bowie (pronounced boo-ee) is also only 30 miles or so away from their parent Baltimore Orioles, and have the 2nd largest stadium in the Eastern League. For 2010 they’ve added last year’s Carolina League Pitcher of the Year, Player of the Year, and Batting Champion and expectations are high.
With all of that said, we might hate the Baysox. Richmond/Bowie could become something akin to UVA/VT or maybe VCU/ODU anyway. Bowie and Richmond are both in the Western Division of the Eastern League and will be competing directly for a play-off berth. At 124 miles away, Bowie is the closest opponent to Richmond (and they’re planning an invasion in May…). To top it off, we play them 29 times this season, more than any other team. How we do against the Baysox will go a long way in shaping the season.
Go get’em, Squirrels!
