The Squirrels Play Ball
While the majority of the crowd was hungry to see their Baysox after a long off season, it was the Richmond both present and at home that had the bigger night. For them, this was a long time coming.
The first fans at the gate were donning their Flying Squirrels jerseys. Jerry Daisey and his 2 boys travelled the 3 hours from Colonial Heights because they just were too excited to wait until next week’s home opener. It was a nice red that stood out amongst a sea of orange and black. While the majority of the crowd was hungry to see their Baysox after a long off season, it was the Richmond both present and at home that had the bigger night. For them, this was a long time coming.
The Diamond may have only missed professional baseball for one year, but I would venture to say due the weird relationship the Braves had with their AAA team, the true minor league baseball experience was missing from Richmond for a long time. Welcome crazy promotional nights. Welcome extreme fan interaction. Welcome to a city embracing its team once again.
As for the actual game itself, it was hard to pull anything out of it. The game was just starting to get interesting before Mother Nature took over. The Baysox held a 1-0 lead over the Squirrels, but it was clutch defense that kept the game that close. In the second inning with 2 outs, right fielder Roger Kieschnick threw out Baysox catcher Caleb Joseph at the plate. In the 4th inning, the Baysox loaded the bases and only managed to score 1 run after 2 key put outs at the plate by third baseman Connor Gillaspie. When the rain finally ended the game, the Squirrels had two men on base against the tough Baysox starter.
The game will be resumed Friday evening midway through the top of the 5th and will be followed by another game immediately after. Hopefully, the Richmond Flying Squirrels will find a way to start the season on a winning note. Even if they can’t pull out the win, Richmond,VA has already won by having this organization being added to our community.
