Richmond vs. Bowie and Harrisburg

The Squirrels take two of three against the Curve and now move on to The Hated Baysox for a four game series. They’ll take on the Harrisburg Senators, after a day off, next Tuesday.

Previous Series

Richmond had a short and sweet three game home stand versus the Altoona Curve. Friday night the Squirrels used a big 6th inning to push past the Curve. On Saturday, stud pitcher Eric Surkamp continued his dominance as Richmond won 5-0. Sunday, well it was Mother’s Day and there was a lot of pink. The Squirrels lost their bats and fell 7-2.

Going to Bowie

The Baysox lost two out of three versus Erie this weekend and they still maintained their 1st place position in the Western Division of the Eastern League. That is what happens when every team is within one game of each other. The Baysox returned a number of starters from last year’s club, including former Carolina League (High A) MVP Brandon Waring, former Carolina League Batting Champion Robbie Widlansky, and former top prospects Chorye Spoone and Steve Johnson. It’s the new guys that are having the most success this season.

Back Home for the Senators

The Washington Nationals AA Squad will make the trip to RVA for a big four game series at the Diamond starting Thursday. Harrisburg will have just come off a three game set with Altoona where they hope to get their mojo back after dropping three straight to the Reading Phillies. Unfortunately, Richmond will be forced to face the Senators ace, Brad Peacock. Peacock is sporting a 4-1 record with a 2.29 ERA despite a disastrous outing vs Reading.

Interesting Notes about the Squirrels

Eric Surkamp was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week after making two starts for the Squirrels, winning both while striking out 20 batters. He worked a combined 12 1/3 innings, allowing just a lone run (0.79 ERA) on four hits.

Reliever Dan Otero is also pitching well for the Squirrels. He has tossed 10 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his last six appearances, the longest scoreless streak of the season for a Flying Squirrels pitcher. The 26-year-old has struck out 13 batters and walked none while holding opponents to a .225 (9-for-40) average against over the course of the streak.

Daryl Maday is back and ready to start after being placed on the DL with an illness. Maday will take the mound tonight vs the Baysox.
